The main task of the photo archive is the collection and storing of photographic material on modern and contemporary visual art. From modest beginnings at the founding of Moderna galerija in 1948 the facility has evolved into a vast photographic archive of material connected mostly with Slovene artists and different art trends.
The archive of photographs, transparencies and negatives represents a precious research resource and is available to outside users. The archive now consists of over 42,000 negatives, 80,000 positives and 23,000 transparencies.
The conditions for borrowing photographic material are set out in the internal rules of the museum, the general regulations and the price list.

Photographic studio
In addition to the photographic archive, Moderna galerija also features a studio, which for years has been available to other similar institutions: National gallery, Archive of Slovenia, etc. The photographers working in the studio have greatly contributed to the comprehensive photographic archive of Moderna galerija.
