The documentation department was established in 1971. Since then it has been systematically collecting:
- information on exhibition activities in Slovenia
- archive material on Slovene artists and venues.
Lists of documentation and selected bibliographies in the catalogues of the major retrospective exhibitions of Moderna galerija's are being compiled in the department.
Curators Ljerka Menaše and Eva Gspan were responsible for setting up the department.
Functions and servicies:
- gathering together information about exhibitions in Slovenia and the appearances of Slovene artists at exhibitions abroad.
Since 1989 data from different sources (invitation cards, posters, catalogues, newspaper clippings) have being stored on a database using the programme RAZSTAVA (exhibition).
- compiling of bio-bibliographies of 20th/21st century artists residing in Slovenia.
Since 1993 this data has been accessible using the programme UMETNIK (artist).
A comprehensive database of Slovene fine arts of the 20th/21st centuries is being built by collecting, selecting and evaluating of information on the artists, their activities and their following in the media and society.
Some information from the selected artists' biographies, their exhibitions and basic references are now presented on the internet. Slovenian museums and galleries are asked to complete the questionnaire on our website → online database Raz_Ume.
Moderna galerija is an associated partner in the VEKTOR (European Contemporary Art Archives) project.
