5 November - 6 December 2009
Mala galerija, Slovenska cesta 35, Ljubljana
You are kindly invited to attend the opening of the exhibition on Thursday, 5 November, at 8 p.m. at the Mala galerija.
The works of Tao G. Vrhovec Sambolec include audiovisual and mixed-media installations, sound interventions in public spaces, and composed as well as improvised electro-acoustic music. In his installations, he investigates relations between transitory phenomena, such as sound and weather, and architectural space.
In his current project the artist has worked to create an intervention at the Mala galerija by focusing on the relation of the building to the exterior force of rain. Through the construction of a digital, sensing system, the project essentially responds to the presence of rain: each drop of rain as it falls onto a specially constructed horizontal plate mounted at the entrance to the Museum comes to trigger a "mirror image" in which a small drop of water rises from the floor of the Museum.
This extremely subtle and yet no less dramatic orchestration comes to create an imaginary play. As viewers we are asked to follow the corresponding relation between an exterior and an interior, between a remote cause and its resulting effect. By forming a link between the rain outside, and the interior event, Sambolec dramatizes the possibility of the outside coming in. The transitory instant of rain finds a way into the building, returning in the form of a sculptural effect to lead the imagination through a spatial poetics, where inside and outside begin to converse.
Born in 1972 in Ljubljana, Tao G. Vrhovec Sambolec lives and works as a musician and artist based in Amsterdam and Ljubljana. In 1996 he and Tomaž Grom formed the electro-acoustic improvisation duo TILT. As an improviser he has performed with numerous electro-acoustic musicians. So far he has released two CDs with the duo Tilt. He is the founder of an international cycle of sound events, lectures, and workshops "Bitshift" in the Kapelica Gallery in Ljubljana, which started in 2001.
