Due to the planned renovation works of the Moderna galerija building, which have not started yet despite the set deadlines, the exhibitions program of Slovenia's principal institution for modern and contemporary art has been severely restricted for several months. Moderna galerija is forced to use its program funds for renting the temporary premises in the Tobačna tovarna building, where it will have storage facilities and offices, but unfortunately no exhibition spaces.
The "Hosting Moderna galerija!" action aims to call attention to the unenviable position of our principal institution and also generally of contemporary visual art in Slovenia and to the absence of any kind of vision concerning contemporary visual art on the part of the current official cultural policy. To express their support of Moderna galerija and its endeavors for better conditions of work, a number of spaces have planned various symbolic actions (exhibitions, presentations, discussions) as part of their 2008 programs, to give Moderna galerija an opportunity to have some continuity in its exhibitions program. So far the following spaces have joined the action: the Nova Gorica City Gallery, the City Art Museum Ljubljana, the SCCA Ljubljana, the City Museum of Ljubljana, the Center for Contemporary Art Celje, the Ljubljana galleries Alkatraz, Ganes Pratt, Kapelica, Kresija, Photon, P74, and Škuc, the EX-garaža Gallery in Maribor, the Simulaker Gallery in Novo mesto, the Museum of too Modern Art in Spodnji Hotič and the Bežigrad Gallery.
This action is an appeal to establish a platform for connections and cooperation between institutions and individuals working in the field of contemporary art. The first act in this process is the "hosting moderna galerija.doc" in EX-garaža in Maribor. EX-garaža will stage a spatial installation presenting some of Moderna galerija?s leaflets, books, catalogues and other publications produced between 1950 and 2007.
EX-garaža is a development of the concept "gUF - garage for art photography" (2005 and 2006), that is, of taking over garages in Maribor for the presentations of ideas, concepts, and views of contemporary visual art.
Moderna galerija is currently without its exhibition spaces, and in Maribor there is such a shortage of spaces for contemporary visual art that garages, hallways, and underpasses are used; similarly, another thing as good as absent in Slovenia is art foundations. The "son:DA foundation" will thus be one of the few foundations for contemporary art in Slovenia. On Friday, 21 December 2007, the vision and the concept of the "son:DA foundation" will be presented, concurrently with the opening of the exhibition at the same time as the exhibition is opened.
