Branka Stipančić: Group of Six Artists and a talk with Mladen Stilinovićem

Friday, 19 September 2014, 6 p.m.
Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova, Ljubljana

You are kindly invited to attend the lecture by a Croatian art-critic and curator Branka Stipančić and a talk with the artist Mladen Stilinović on Friday, 19 September 2014, at 6 p.m. at the seminar of the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova. The lecture and the talk in Croatian are part of the Politicization of Friendship exhibition program.

The lecture is about the post-conceptual Group of Six Artists (Boris Demur, Željko Jerman, Vlado Martek, Mladen Stilinović, Sven Stilinović and Fedor Vučemilović), which organized exhibitions-actions in public sites in Zagreb in the second half of the 1970s. To provide a context for the works, Stipančić will give a short introduction about the political and cultural life in the former Yugoslavia. At that time the artists started exploring a wider spectrum of themes than during modernism, using different media, such as photography, text, video, performance, artist?s book, installations, interventions in space, etc. At the same time, they challenged the role of museums and galleries in the presentation of their works by assuming a more active role themselves. In accordance with the notion of the liberation of art, the Group of Six Artists tried to establish a more direct communication with their audience, which led them to do actions in the streets.
